What this section is about

This section sets the posture of the course before any content is taught. It explains what the course is trying to form in you, who it is written for, the six non-negotiables that run through everything that follows, how you will be assessed, and how to set yourself up to finish. It also carries the course disclaimer in full, and the theological reflection offered as supplementary viewing.

Safeguarding is not administration. It is part of the pastoral office, and it stands or falls on the same qualities as the rest of it: attention, honesty, courage, and the willingness to act when acting is uncomfortable.

By the end of this section, you will be able to:

• Explain what this course is trying to form, and why it is longer than most.
• State the six non-negotiables and identify which you expect to find hardest.
• Explain how the quizzes work, what the pass mark is, and why it is set there.
• Describe what the certificate does and does not signify.
• Identify the safeguarding lead and statutory route that govern your own ministry.

Assessment

Twenty questions drawn at random from a bank of sixty, twenty-five minutes, eighty per cent to pass, two attempts, highest grade. It covers this section only.

Before you move on

• All five units marked as done.
• Your safeguarding lead, statutory route, and emergency number written into the companion workbook.
• The Orientation quiz passed.
