    Welcome to Why We Worship This Way

    Understand liturgical worship in the Western Rite tradition: where its shape came from, what the vesture and colours say, what the gestures mean, and why beauty belongs in worship.

    Study commitmentApproximately 10 hours across four units. Most people find three weeks comfortable and four unhurried.

    Who may beginEveryone is welcome. No prior study, qualifications or church membership are required.

    Who this course is for

    For enquirers and visitors, those newly arrived in a liturgical congregation, servers, readers and sacristans, and lifelong churchgoers who would like to understand the worship they share. No Latin, Greek or Hebrew is required.

    What you will learn

    You will trace the shape of Western Rite worship, recognise its garments and colours, explain gestures at the altar, and understand the body's part in prayer. You will consider the difference between beauty offered as reverence and display offered as spectacle, and practise explaining worship clearly to an enquirer.

    Course content — preview the four units

    1. Why There Is a Shape at All — 3 hours. The earliest descriptions of Christian worship, Word and Sacrament, fixed liturgical texts, and why the altar is not a stage.
    2. What the Church Wears — 2½ hours. Where vestments came from, who wears them, liturgical colour, cost and conscience.
    3. What the Church Does at the Altar — 2½ hours. Gesture as language, the sign of the cross, the elevation, the breaking of bread and restraint.
    4. The Body at Prayer, and the Place of Beauty — 2 hours. Standing, kneeling, sitting, bowing, raising the hands, and beauty in simple worship.

    What you can expect

    Read each unit carefully, spend time with its illustrations, and complete its quiz. Each quiz draws 20 questions, allows 25 minutes and requires 80% to pass. There is no essay or written submission. Further reading is offered for enrichment; material that appears only there is not assessed.

    The certificate records completion of this ten-hour course. It is a record of study, not a qualification, licence or authorisation to minister.
